Ford favors dropping Mich. personal property tax

MACKINAC ISLAND, MI — Ford Motor Co. Executive Chairman Bill Ford says Michigan should eliminate its personal property tax to make the state more economically competitive.
During a speech Thursday on Mackinac Island, Ford said the tax puts Michigan at a disadvantage against neighboring states such as Ohio, as well as Canada.
He said Michigan also needs to invest in upgrading its electric grid.
The state Senate voted earlier this month to eliminate the personal property tax, which includes a levy on businesses' computers and equipment. The measure is pending in the House.
Opponents of lifting the tax say it could reduce funding for already-strapped public schools and local governments.
Ford said during the Detroit Regional Chamber's annual conference that Michigan should make sure its policies aren't holding back innovation and prosperity.
